Mak Eshka'rey Imperial Assault

Mak is a Bothan who uses an illegally modified longblaster rifle. He fights for the Alliance because he wants to restore the Republic and take down the Galactic Empire. I find him quite an interesting character, not quite a sniper who, as the game progresses and you have been through several missions can deal a lot of damage consistently who doesn’t get as much table time as Loku, who is an actual sniper, but as I write this I am thinking about how well he plays and I think he should get more outings than he does.

I have not played as him often, mainly because he rolls two blue dice for his starting weapon and as I prefer to play aggressively I don’t really like the rogue tendencies that see him slipping and dodging whilst staying away and harassing the enemy.

I have played a campaign while he was being used, however, and if you can use him effectively he is extremely useful for taking out the AT-ST, Vader, Maul and others with his No Escape ability. This basically lets him shoot the target, focus, which gains him a die and then shoot the same target again all for two strain. Combine this with a tier-three weapon and you are working with a veritable powerhouse who is hard to hit.

Early in a campaign, his ambush ability was useful because he also has covert. This means enemies more than four spaces away don’t have line of sight to him and for a single strain, he gained pierce two on his attacks which mitigated some of the disadvantages of his starting weapon. Once we got him the E-11 and the marksman barrel he was able to put a lot more into battle and was able to use disengage to great effect rarely taking any damage in contacts but in my opinion, was always too far away from the action to be fun. If I was playing double-handed then maybe combine him with Gaarkan or Diala I would use him more often.

Disengage vs Supply network early on in my opinion is pretty simple because Supply Network is a deplete action so can not be used again somewhat limiting its usefulness whereas disengage is an “exhaust” so I would probably always go with it especially as I have seen it in action and then Jeswandi Training, Expertise or perhaps Execute and No Escape is a no brainer over Decoy.
